Quotation from Representative Men and Old Families of Rhode Island
p. 2146-8 (v 2 of 2):
"(VI) William Simeon Huntoon, father of William, was born in January 1812 in Rutland VT. He left home when a young man, and went to Springfield MA where he began life, and where he resided for a number of years, finally engaging in the manufacture of whips at Westfield MA. He remained there until 1845, when he disposed of the business, came to Providence, and began the manufacture of cigars in a small way. The business grew from the start, and in time he had the largest cigar factory in New England. He continued the manufacture of cigars, with his son William as a partner, establishing the firm of William S. Huntoon and Son, wholesalers and retailers of cigars. Subsequently, Mr. Samuel Gorham, who had been employed as a clerk, was admitted to partnership, under the firm name Huntoon and Gorham, which name continued (even after the death of William S. Huntoon) for thirty-two years, when Mr. William Huntoon purchased the interest of Mr. Gorham.
William S. Huntoon was married in Springfield MA to Martha Pease (Error: Martha Pease Caswell) of that city. She survived him and died in Providence Jan 5 1894 aged eighty-two. They had one child, William. Mr. Huntoon suffered from poor health for a number of years before his death, so that his extensive business affairs were looked after by his son. He died August 14, 1876, and was buried at Swan Point Cemetery. "

Determination
of William Simeon Huntoon's wife's maiden name -- Pease or
Caswell?
Martha Caswell, daughter of Samuel Caswell and Martha Pease,
wife of William Huntoon, used the "P." with her name
throughout her life. In her marriage announcement in the Columbian
Centinel it was Martha P. Caswell.; on deeds where she released dower, it is M.
P. Huntoon; burial markers have MPH; and the 1860 and 1870 censuses both identify Martha P. Huntoon.
The death certificate does not say Caswell, but Pease. The handwritten entries in the back of
my inherited copy of Huntoon geneology
(made probably by Harrison Barrows Huntoon) say Martha Pease Huntoon, with Caswell inserted above
line by a later person.
But her correct maiden name was Martha Pease Caswell, honoring her mother
Martha Pease, and upon the early death of her parents (her mother in 1821 when
she was but 10 years of age and her father two years later, she may have been placed with the Pease family or
received support from them.
And the Caswell is definitely retained as the family name...not
Pease. Neither of her grandchildren were named Pease, and her second grandchild's
name was William Caswell Trafton Huntoon. The Trafton was dropped from use,
and that person used William Caswell Huntoon, and his son was known as William
Caswell
Huntoon, Jr. At Swan Point Cemetery, Providence RI, the Huntoon obelisk
states that Martha P.
Caswell was born March 20 1811, and died Jan 5, 1894. Swan Point
Cemetery records of Huntoon plot shows Martha Pease
Caswell Huntoon.
The sole child of William S. and Martha P. Huntoon was:
i.
William Huntoon, b. July 29, 1834, Springfield, Hampden County MA;
d. September 15, 1903, Providence, RI.
