The Huntoon Family - The 1881 Family History Updated An updating of Daniel T. V. Huntoon's 1881 history of the Huntoon family of New Hampshire, with added data This webpage presents an Internet-based edition of Daniel T. V. Huntoon's "The Hunton Family", a genealogy of the family descending from Philip Hunton of Exeter, NH (1689). Published in 1881 (University Press, John Wilson & Son, Cambridge MA), it not only offers us an early genealogy of a New Hampshire family, but is significant because he gives us data on people at a time and place where vital records used by genealogists are lacking. The Huntoon variation of the name Hunton. Let's face it. Huntoon is an unusual name. As discussed in the chapter of Daniel T. V. Huntoon's genealogy (see sidebar), the name Hunton became Huntoon for many, if not most, of the descendents of Philip Hunton by the mid-eighteenth century. That seems to be the only place in U.S. history where this name change was made. It is likely, in point of fact, that if your family name was at any point in history Huntoon, you are descended from Philip Hunton of Exeter and Kingston, New Hampshire. Daniel T. V. Huntoon's purpose in writing his family's history. I suspect it was Daniel T.V. Huntoon's primary purpose to capture on paper what must have been an exciting and changing world of the 19th century United States. If one looks at his immediate family in the genealogy, one notes that in two generations they had left New Hampshire, settled in the Canton MA. But his father was a well-known minister who preached around the country, and the family lived in Maine and Illinois for a time. Some of his brothers moved on to California and Idaho Territory. This was not his only written work. The work for which he is more well-known today is his History of Canton, Massachusetts. For his biography and picture, it's important to see the Canton Historical Society's work at www.canton.org. I've included specific URL's at his and his father's biographies. Daniel T. V. Huntoon's genealogy describes a family that settled in New Hampshire thru the Revolutionary War and then spread to neighboring New England states and west across the United States--to Michigan, Illinois, Kansas, California. Huntoons participated in the opening of New England, and then the Western frontiers. Many of the individuals listed in his book lived in New Hampshire, particularly the towns of Kingston, Salisbury, and Unity. In the town of Unity, New Hampshire (founded in 1772), the name Huntoon was certainly the most numerous surname in the years from 1775 to 1800. Many of the Huntoons had French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, or Civil War military service. Several were early settlers in neighboring Vermont and Maine. About this web text. The web presentation follows the original 1880 book. Families are listed according to the original numbering, with original page references too . Deviations (including additional material and links to other Huntoon resources) are identified, usually by red text. The indexes have been totally redone to take advantage of hypertext links. I take credit and blame for what I've added. It's clear that Daniel T. V. Huntoon's work has stood up pretty well to the tests of time, with the pesky exception of lack of footnoting. The copy of the Hunton Family that I used for my work belonged to my grandfather, Harrison Barrows Huntoon, personally inscribed at 691 High Street, Providence RI in June 1884. He was 16 years old at that time. Revisions, corrections, suggestions. I hope you will find the site informative and useful. You can ask a question or suggest revisions or corrections by e-mail to me at hhuntoon@mindspring.com. I am very much open to mention of revision or correction, where newly-identified facts or significant material suggest. Harry Huntoon, Arlington VA |
