Quotation from Eisler, as
noted above: "Hiram Judson Huntoon enrolled in Company I of the 5th
Vermont Regiment on August 27, 1861 and was mustered in on September 16,
1861. He was taken prisoner June 29, 1862 [probably as Savage's Station,
Virginia] and paroled September 13, 1862. He was mustered out October 5,
1864. Note: In the battle of Savage's Station, the Fifth Vermont suffered
the greatest loss , in killed and wounded, of any Vermont regiment in any one
engagement. Company I suffered at least 11 wounded and 6 killed. The
Fifth Vermont was in 25 battles, including Antiedam, Gettysburg, the Wilderness,
and Cold Harbor. Hiram Judson Huntoon was probably in 21 of those
battles. Hiram received Civil War pension #217,324 of $2.00 per month for
a gunshot wound in his right arm. His rank was Private."
