Or move to one of the index pages at the top, or to: | The 1850 Census of the United States was the first time all individual residents of the United States were enumerated. Prior to that time, censuses were limited to heads of households, and the count of individuals within the household. I have chosen to extract the data about those with name Huntoon (plus alternative spellings and pronunciations) and associate it with individuals in this Huntoon Genealogy. This is an ongoing project, starting with the State of New Hampshire. Individuals with surname Huntoon not found in the Huntoon Genealogy are identified. Click back and forth from the census data to the genealogy text. With the first State Census--New Hampshire--I found about 245 individuals named Huntoon, Hantoon, Hunton, etc. Of these, about 200 are in my opinion certainly the same as families discussed in Daniel T. V. Huntoon's book. In addition, there are seven families containing 25 individuals that can't place. Also I had difficulty with 18 mostly-single individuals in boarding-houses, living with other families, or in one case living in a Shaker community in Enfield, NH. Click on NH1850 to go to the data. If you have information or any reasonable basis to assign individuals--or if you don't like my assignments--or for any problem you find, please send an email to the address on the homepage telling me. I would note that most of this work is based on my reading of census handwriting, and therefore is subject to error of interpretation! Finally, note that after beginning the matching the 1850 census to his book, I am very much biased to think that Daniel T. V. Huntoon did a remarkable job on the Huntoon Genealogy. He had no internet, no computer, and 120 years ago -- in 1880 there was no genealogical tradition to follow or improve upon. He left us with remarkably "good data", which is the ultimate compliment to him. As I add more states to this match, I will send an email to HUNTOON-L.
